The Islamic Manner of Sharing food and Drinks
Islam inculcates fine manners of taking food and beverages both together and alone.
This shows Muslims how to be respectful, kind and courteous, especially when dealing with others who provide things to us, and how to be thankful for all that Allah gives us. This teaching originates from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) and is easy to incorporate in everyone's lives – whether it's in the home at mealtimes or social events. This means everyone will be learning how to eat with grace - even sharing their drinks and food and understanding not all have the ability to eat like them.
Giving the Drink According to the Order
The Islamic Manner lays stress on right to which each individual is entitled. When drinking, one should always give the drink to the person entitled but with the permission it may be given to another. The example of Prophet (peace be upon him) narrated by Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) tells us that a drink was given to Prophet (peace be upon him), and there was sitting on his right a young boy, and on his left was an old man.
The Prophet then asked the boy if he will permit him to give this drink to the old man, but the boy didn't want to waive his right.
The Prophet(peace be upon him) the right of this boy (according to the hadith he gave him drink first) and then said:
Narrated by Sahl (RA) - Sahih al-Bukhari 5620
From this hadith one learns the very fact of respecting each person’s right, age is not the deciding factor if a right is not the right of the person that receives drink but the asking for a permission has demonstrated their gentleness. If Muslims continue to follow this principle it will avoid making each other look embarrassed and stupid in this situation.
Food for one is enough for two
This hadith about using your Food that it must be enough, for example, if there is a Food of one man it is available enough for a man also. Food for one person is enough for two; Food for two people is enough for four; Food for four people is enough for eight. Prophet (peace be upon him) - Narrated by Jabir (RA) - Sahih Muslim 4182 “This command from our Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) in order to give charity and helping each other!”
A man might look at a very small amount of food presented to him and think that it is not enough for two but still because it is from another and is made available it is implied that as with a prayer Allah (SWT) would grant them the Barakah to provide enough.
Here, it is not meant the physical content increases but that a generous mindset must be developed so that Muslims do not become overly selfish and fail to take benefit from the available food for both parties. These can help Muslims develop strong family relations and bonds with friends/strangers who may arrive at one's home and eat.
Etiquette for the food taken in someone else’s home
The Quran speaks about different homes where the above mentioned verse describes people sitting individually, in families and as friends taking Food together with an implicit reference of one man asking for Food. The Holy Quran states:
"… And there is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately...'' Al-Quran 24:61
This mention of different home premises and then saying that there is no fault and that the person taking the Food should verbally greet with the Salam which was taught to them from Allah (SWT) which is blessed and pure, has highlighted not just the act of consuming the food itself but the manners that go with taking food in somebody’s home:
1. The fact of taking Food whether together or separate is not a point of contention between people it is not made difficult. It can vary based on people, family or conditions.
2. Greeting with Salam while one walks into any house; this implies kindness, respect and it is blessed greeting that Allah gave.
When this verse of the Quran is implemented within a Muslims everyday life it implies that a Meal or Drink can turn into a learning activity or practice of good manners and conduct in a person's character. Simultaneously these verse also indicates that eating altogether isn't mandatory, it provides space to act upon your different schedule, needs or conditions.
A few simple lessons for Muslims to uphold:
1. Always respect the rights of another person to use, serve the other when you serve food, and give food after asking and seeking permission.
2. Not to think that a food is not enough to provide more to another person, but share it freely if given by others.
3. Don't to be selfish, Sharing food will not create scarcity but it will bring Barakah into their lives.
4. Good manners for using food: be grateful for Food, show contentment, and eat.
5. Say the Salam when you enter into someone’s home, this is from Allah (SWT) and very blessed and useful.
6. Use the dining table as an opportunity to bond families and display respect towards guests and the Food you share.
Conclusion
By following these important Etiquette Muslims could bring everyday meals into special occasions of demonstrating Good conduct and behavior and for those who wish to adopt Islamic manners of sharing food and drinking and be able to serve their guests and families respectfully and Charitably making their meals and beverages into the best.
By having a glance at the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) demonstrates the importance to give right to person who was meant to have drink first, a Muslim cannot refuse the offers and the provisions that is to share the Food because it brings the persons have food at first and another second sharing, and the third example of Quran 24:61 it describes how to treat people in their houses and taking Food has turned into one method to achieve love and unity among each other through common eating and Greeting with Salaam as that what was thought to them as part of the blessing they receive in their homes.
