Islamic Guidelines for Using Plates and Utensils
Islam places emphasis on the respectful and thankful use of all that is given to us in life-even our food, drinks, plates, cups, and utensils. Our manners at mealtimes should also reflect obedience to the teachings of Islam. We should strive for moderation and purity during our meals.
Of the various rulings of Islam on tableware, the prohibition of using gold and silver dishes and taking due caution when using utensils suspected to have been used for pork stand out significantly.
Eating and Drinking From Gold and Silver Vessels
As mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari, "Do not drink from gold and silver vessels. Do not eat from gold and silver plates. For they are for them in this world and for us in the Hereafter."
(Recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari: 5633).
This is an aspect of Islam whereby extravagance must be avoided. It reminds Muslims that while luxurious and ornate utensils exist, those are meant for a different, later realm of existence.
We should therefore strive to be content and to thank Allah for whatever He provides us and to live with His blessings in a moderate and reasonable way. The use of gold and silver for merely eating or drinking is extravagant and unbecoming behavior expected of a Muslim in this life.
Also relating to silver vessels, our most Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) gave a stringent warning to the companions: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "He who drinks in a silver pot, truly devours Fire for what remains of his stomach". (Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari: 5634).
These warnings, specifically the severe consequences narrated, show the grave prohibition regarding the use of gold and silver for serving and eating.
We must learn from this to have nothing other than pure and acceptable food on a simple utensil.
We have no desire to achieve grandeur if it leads us to such sin that can have severe consequences even in the hereafter.
However, this is not the same as possessing gold and silver or using them for décor as they should be in the hereafter. When not actually used for consumption (eating and drinking), gold and silver can exist in a household for other purposes, although excessive display is again discouraged. What has been prohibited herein is the consumption using gold and silver vessels.
Dishes and Utensils Likely Used for Pork
There are occasions where a Muslim family may be hosted, and served food in dishes that might not always be guaranteed to be immaculate from usage with pork.
A famous question from a companion during the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)'s era highlights how one should proceed if this happens:
A question was posed to Allah's Messenger (SAW) concerning the vessels of the People of the Book – when these neighbors are used to eat their meals together with Muslims in their own kitchen using their utensils – is it appropriate for Muslims to eat using these? A part of the answer was in order to try and acquire a different vessel to eat and drink from rather than the one utilized for cooking with the Pork.
Otherwise (in a scenario that there is only that specific cooking utensil available for use), we should wash it (cook from it) after washing it(a few times) with soap-like cleansing materials.
(Recorded with various wording among the other authenticated a hadeeth). This teaches us to exercise caution where even the slightest doubt of contamination with any impermissible element of food is involved in the vessel we are to eat from.
Practical Implementations for Children and Family
At a younger level, children can be taught and encouraged to choose to consume anything on ordinary clean plates and in appropriate cups. Children can be made to understand that elaborate dishes and utensils are not of much importance for enjoyment of a meal-the food that nourishes the soul and body is adequate and acceptable when taken from any simple clean utensil as long as it is made by use of what is permitted.
Also, families should teach their young children to determine if a vessel that will be used by anyone, particularly outside of the home or in case when its history of use for non Islamic meal occasions is unknown,is in fact sufficiently cleaned and has thus acquired Islamic permissibility to eat and drink from.
Where a container is identified to be utilized with Pork within it during food preparation or eating – it needs to be handled as narrated in the above mention for our consumption.
Cleanliness, preventing wastefulness of food and utensils and the appreciation of food provided to us are values to be instilled within every member of a Muslim family.
This will bring about a generation who understands not just how to use tableware in the way that pleases Allah but also will value the food it provides them; enabling this tradition to grow amongst the masses of Muslims throughout the globe.
A Brief Reminder
In conclusion, Islamic rules concerning eating and drinking with certain items of tableware and utensils have been set in place to encourage a Muslim household to avoid over-indulgence during meals and to foster a general appreciation and thanks to Allah for His blessings with a mindset of pure intentions and proper grooming.
There are no specific blessings associated with using gold and silver over simple utensils whereas gold and silver utensils for any form of eating and drinking; especially silver ones have been strictly and strongly prohibited and warnings associated there are a clear indication of the serious consequences of contravening these clearcut instructions given to us by Islam that will enable us to earn rewards as opposed to the consequences of sin.
