Will Animals Also Be Judged on the Day of Resurrection?

Question: A friend from another faith asks me: "If God resurrects humans in the Hereafter to question them, will He also resurrect and question the animals, birds, worms, and insects that lived on earth? Is there a Heaven or Hell for them as well?"

– M. Muhammad Mustafa, Sivakasi.

Answer: There is a reckoning for them too; however, it differs from the reckoning of humans.

Since humans possess the faculty of reason, only they are granted the reward of Heaven or the punishment of Hell based on their good and bad deeds.

As other living creatures lack this faculty of reason, God will satisfy them regarding the harm or suffering they endured.

6745 – Yahya bin Ayyub, Qutaibah, and Ibn Hujr narrated to us—saying Ismail (meaning Ibn Ja'far) narrated to us—from Al-Ala, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

"You shall certainly restore rights to their owners on the Day of Judgment, to the extent that retribution will be exacted for the hornless sheep from the horned sheep."

On the Day of Judgment, you must return rights (that were usurped) to those to whom they belong. The Prophet’s saying indicates that a reckoning will take place between a horned sheep and a hornless sheep (regarding harm caused).

(Source: Muslim 4679)

If one sheep had butted and attacked another, God will grant the sheep that was butted the opportunity to retaliate against the one that attacked it. Justice will be served for such grievances, and thereafter, they will be turned to dust.
