Guidelines for Women’s Attire in Islam

Women’s Attire in Islam Islamic guidelines regarding modesty and the clothes we wear-as well as personal behavior and appearance-teach us how to live as Muslims with honor, dignity, privacy, modesty, and obedience to Allah (SWT). But what exactly is the standard when it comes to women’s clothing in Islam? Read on to get a clearer sense of the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding these matters.

What to wear in the Islamic religion

1. Proper Coverage According to the guidelines above, a woman must cover all of her body, except her face, arms, and legs. Clothing should be designed to be appropriately covering, concealing natural and intimate areas of her body.

Allah (SWT) says: “And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to display their adornment except what is apparent of it; and let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms...” -Holy Qur’an 24:31 So whether you wear an abaya, jilbab, niqab, burqa, or dress your usual way under it, make sure the body covering provides the kind of substantial privacy and protection this scripture suggests.

2. Modesty in Presentation When it comes to clothing and beauty in Islam, there is nothing “wrong” with showing your true yourself; as a Muslim woman, you’re allowed to enjoy your clothes and your body.

There are, however, some rules associated with revealing all of your glory.

It says of the believing woman: “ ...and not to display their adornment except what is apparent of it;” -Holy Qur’an 24:31 the Qur’an then continues by explaining the men and/or circumstances to whom a Muslim woman can reveal adornments: husbands, fathers, fathers-in-law, sons, stepsons, brothers, nephew, women, service staff who do not lust for women, or children not yet cognizant of sexual matters. This simply means, of course, a Muslim woman may appear “put together”, as they say. Modesty in Islamic clothing is NOT the idea of dressing in rags.

It should not be overly revealing, ill-chosen, indecent in terms of design, or in a manner that is at variance with the religion.

 3. No Revealing or Body-Conforming Clothing Islamic teachings also strongly condemn the Wearing of clothes that fail to serve as actual cover and merely hug your contours or are very revealing. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned of those times: “There would be ( women) wearing dresses that look like they are naked…” He said that his own people would be the first to bear this curse.

(Reported by Abu Hurayrah [RA] and narrated by Muslims) So, beyond this strict, absolute mandate, any woman wearing anything that reveals and defines specific body curves of the body, that shows too much skin by being transparent or sheer and/or is very tight around the body, does not meet dresscode in Islam requirements.

4. No Attention-Grabbing Accessories The Holy Qur’an advises to draw a veil over the bosom. It tells believing women: “…and let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment.” -Holy Qur’an 24:31 The advice about not striking your feet is generally considered an instruction against using visible adornments such as bangles that produce sound when you walk, for no other purpose than to draw unnecessary attention to these secret adornments.

Thus not only is the style and design of Islamic dress an issue, so also is using ornamentation or accessory items that deliberately call unnecessary attention to yourself – even if these pieces aren’t visibly visible in the first place.

5. Lead By Example (Believing Women’s Modesty) For evidence of the standards applied the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) taught that believing women would attend the Fajr prayer in the early mornings and when finished, they would simply return to their homes in darkness, without their identity necessarily being known due to the outer covering.

It is related from ‘Aisha (RA) in Al-Bukhari: [Believing women] used to offer the Fajr prayer with Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) and would return to their homes, wrapping their garments around themselves, and no one recognized them.

6. Selecting the Proper attire for Muslim Women A few simple concepts to bear in mind about selecting a proper garment for women to wear in Islam: Islam’s clothing principles is that any garment worn by women should not be:

– sheer and see-through

– too small and too tight and revealing of her form

– designed to draw unnecessary attention to her body or beauty – worn in a manner as to openly display “adornments” (excluding, of course, certain relatives, etc.)

7. Modesty Beyond The Wardrobe Obviously Muslim women’s Islamic clothing advice, in Islam as a whole, is more than just what is draped on our backs or worn to adorn our ears, fingers, or necks.

It comes along with a lowered gaze, dignified and modest behaviour, an overall modest attitude, chastity and overall modest deportment (that can never begin at the feet for both genders and continue only towards the head as some have mistakenly taught for hundreds of years; one can’t be modest from head to foot and then begin showing their knees, hips, the fullness of their bottom etc. And believe the person has been dressed modest!).

It means striving to remain decent, not only in outward appearance but as well inwardly in heart, mind and intention-without excessive, attention seeking vanity, beauty or allure. We need to present the beauty we do possess through modesty in such a way that doesn’t beckon attraction, only respect for our presentation.

The beauty must reside within the core not just upon our person.

This is only for Islamic knowledge informations not for hurting others.
